How to do Norbert’s Gambit, and Exchange CAD for USD without paying currency exchange

How to use “Norbert’s Gambit” to exchange Canadian for US funds

You will need to already have a Canadian dollar account and a US dollar account in your web broker (or whatever you use to trade stocks). If you don’t have this, call you broker (in my case, TD Direct Investments using TD Webbroker) to have them set this up.

Let’s begin:

Start in your Canadian account on your web broker (or whatever you’re using) and buy DLR (with a Canadian flag, or DLR.CA sometimes). For amount of shares, divide the amount of CAD you want to convert by the ask price for DLR (with a Canadian flag). For example, I want to exchange $10,000 CAD so I calculate 10000 / 12.81 = 780.64. I take off the 0.64 because you can’t buy fractions of shares (in other words, I will be exchanging a bit less than $10,000 CAD. If I needed to deal with “at least $10,000,” I would round up instead of removing the 0.64.

When you “preview” this stock order, it will give you the total CAD it will cost you (which in my case is less than $10,000 CAD).

Basically, at this point you have essentially bought USD. That means that whatever happens with the value of USD (it might go up or down against CAD), you have that money as USD. If USD goes up after you buy DLR.CA, you gain value.

Once you buy the stock, you must wait (3 business days after you place the trade, usually). After that time has passed, call your broker (in my case, TD Direct Investing at 1800-465-5463, because I’m using the TD Waterhouse web broker platform). Ask them to transfer or “journal over” 780 shares (in my case) of DLR from your Canadian dollar account over to your US dollar account.

Once that is complete, you will see 780 shares of DLR (with a US flag, or DLR.U, or DLR.U.CA) in your US dollar account. You simply sell this stock, and you wind up with the value of the stock in your US dollar account to use (in this case, around $7792 USD, because USD is more valuable than CAD right now).

Pros of Norbert’s Gambit: No exchange rate (you didn’t “convert” your money). You don’t lose 1 or 2 or 4 cents per dollar like you would if you just “bought” US dollars with your Canadian dollars.

Cons of Norbert’s Gambit: You do pay the “ask” price, which is around 1 cent higher than the buy price, so you lose a bit of money that way, and the same thing when you sell. Also, it takes 5 days or so sometimes, so you don’t get to use the USD until next week, maybe. You also pay the trading commission (with TD Waterhouse, it’s $9.99 CAD per trade, so almost $20. Also, you need to have a Canadian and US trading account.

So what are the costs of doing Norbert’s Gambit?

Shorthand answer: For an amount around $10,000, it will cost around $30-$50. Here’s the math, followed by the explanation. Note: I’m going from CAD to USD.

$10,000 USD = $12,800 CAD. Add $40 CAD ($9.99 + $9.99 + $20) = $12,840 CAD

Let’s say you want $10,000 USD. Currently, $1 USD is worth $1.28 CAD. We need to spend $12,800 CAD plus our trading fees (that makes $12,820), plus the small amount we lose (1 or 2 cents on each share) when we buy and sell the stock at the offered-asking prices, which add in a minute.

We figure out how many shares we want to buy (today, each share is $12.77 CAD): 12820 / 12.77 = 1003.9. I’m rounding up in this case to 1004 shares. I have to add (an estimated) 1004 shares x .02 (I add 2 cents per share instead of 1, to be safe on my amounts) to cover what I’ll lose on the offer-ask spread for the stock buy and then the stock sale, and therefore need to add $20.08 CAD total to the amount I’m going to spend. So now I go back and add $20.08 CAD to the amount of CAD I have to start with: I now have to start with $12,800 plus $20 commission (for 2 trades) plus $20 for loss on the offer-ask (for 2 trades). This means I need $12,841 CAD (added $1 to cover those extra cents I rounded off) to end up with $10,000 USD, which USD is worth $12,800 CAD after I lose around $40 CAD to complete the process.

Nica Notes – Nicaragua travel notes

Things to take:

Big cans-style headphones. This place people can be quite loud, and the buildings are not insulated, sometimes separated from halls by nothing more than glass shutters into the hallway. There is NO privacy, and they don’t usually consider whether their little kid and blaring children’s programming is right beside your room when you get home from an exhausting day and want to rest. Bring large headphones and DVD’s too, since their internet will usually not allow streaming movies.

A thin sleeping bag/blanket. Some hostels and hotels will have AC rooms but only give you a thin white sheet for a cover. With the AC on (which might not respond as you expect to temperature settings), you might be either cold or hot, or have to turn it on and off throughout the night, or wear your warmest clothes while sleeping.

Cologne. Because the running water is often cold-only and you won’t want to jump in the shower except when you come in from the hot, and because you might not get proper sleep etc or have an AC room, you might smell just a bit, and some cologne to rub on your body can be good.

Money:

Some travelers have said that Visa cards are easier to use here than Mastercard (at ATMs, anyway). Some have said that with Mastercard, only “BAC” atms will work (ATM in Spanish is “cajero automatico.” “ATM” works too, but only if you pronounce the acronym in perfect Spanish, which I didn’t really succeed at. Also, ATM machines charge various rates to withdraw, reportedly.

Carry cash. There are power outages, and no ATMs will work then.

After trying several ATMs (all of which had VISA logos on them), two worked. (Green and white) Banpro worked for 4000 cordobas, but then when I tried again didn’t work. (Blue) BDF worked for 4000 cordobas, then worked for 200 USD (all ATMs distribute both currencies). I didn’t try pushing it further, partly because there were lots of other people around me at the ATM area of that mall.

Phones:

My Canadian Samsung (supposed to be unlocked) didn’t work with their sim (which also seemed to be very slightly a different size, but it did slide in and seemed to be detected), so I had to get an LG phone (for around $100 USD) plus a sim (a few dollars) plus a weekly package of 2gb data + 60 minutes (for around 210 cordobas).

After connecting to Wi-fi at my hotel, the phones started installing lots of stuff and updating. Took like 20 minutes. I think the girl at the store turned off updates except when connected to wi-fi, to spare my 2gb package. However, somehow it had used 650mb already when I checked at the hotel.

Google Maps worked fine in Managua, so the unavailability of maps here was less of a problem (also, streets don’t have street name markers). (There is no street view, though.)

Meeting people:

Apps: People use Whatsapp, but you can’t really use WhatsApp if you change phones/numbers – always been an issue with them. So I use Wire app, which you can log into with just an email, and it’s “secure.”

Meeting apps are “Latin American Cupid” and “Tinder”

Tinder requires a phone number (to verify) and then a burner email (after you verify, to register I think).

Bus:

Managua to San Juan del Sur: Seems to depart every half hour from “Huembles” (the name of the bus station). The ride is 2 1/2 or 3 hours, and you can get the schedule here: http://thebusschedule.com/EN/ni/ It costs a couple of dollars plus 10 cordobas for a bag to be stored on top. Word has it the busses are “never full” (they will keep taking people until they leave even if you are standing).

How to Look Taller

These are tips that any person can do, and they will make you look approximately 10-15 feet tall. If you use all of these techniques at once, you could achieve a maximum 55 foot tall appearance. Just kidding, but these really will make you look a lot taller.

  • Tuck in your shirt and pull the waist of your pants up. Of course, this makes you look like you have longer legs, which is what makes most tall people tall.
  • Wear pointed shoes
  • Pull up the ankles of your pants (or roll them under or cuff them, or have them hemmed – if you have jeans hemmed, you can have them reattach the hem so they look like they were made that length)
  • Monochroming – wear the same color top and bottom, which makes it appear you have no separation (an illusion of sketchiness) between top and bottom
  • Roll up sleeves and bottom of a shirt, which sometimes makes the shirt look too small. Same with ankles of jeans. This also makes legs look more slender, because it only shows the most slender part.
  • Wear a longer (superlong) necklace.
  • A tighter shirt can make a torso look thinner in comparison to the rest of your body
  • Another note: if you’re using a fashion element that makes you look taller, like a type of necklace, you can accentuate it by wearing a contrasting color underneath, so for example if your necklace is gold or silver, you can wear a black or navy shirt.

How to get Tumblr followers, and build a popular Tumblr account

This is the organic way. There are ways that use software and other tools, but we’re going to look at how any person can make a Tumblr account and get thousands of followers and “notes” within a short space of time (a couple months – which is a realistic amount of time).

Note: The more genuinely you build followers, the better followers you will have. The more spammy, low-investment you go about it, the more crappy (often fake accounts or bots) followers you will have). It’s up to you. There’s no real way around this as far as I know.

Leave your new account 24 hours

This is if you’re just creating a new account for the first time. Create it, and don’t like or do anything at all. Just leave it for 24 hours.

Attractive account

This doesn’t mean “photos of an attractive person.”

It means using easy-to-do visual things to make your account attractive, so that when people see it, they are more likely to follow. How? First, pick your theme colors – for example, dark photos with black backgrounds and red highlights, then all your photos will look like that, although some might have white highlights or whatever as well. Find bigger accounts that have similar themes, and take note (and you can reblog their stuff as it applies to your blog). You can also “send a message” to them and ask them for a “blog rate.” Your message can literally just say “Blog rate?? :)” You can do this 20 times a day or something.

Bot posting

Get a bot that automatically posts your images, like “Tumblr Queue Added,” and also collect like 10 folders full of around 300 images each. Post around 20 images per day with this.
